If you love light and sound shows, and happen to be visiting Jerusalem in 2012, than you’re in luck! The Old City of Jerusalem has got two light and sound shows that are an absolute must for any visitor, the Tower of David ‘Night Spectacular,’ and the ‘Lanterns in the Old City,’ show.
The Tower of David ‘Night Spectacular,’ was actually dubbed the ‘best night show in Israel, period,’ by the Marker magazine, and is a stunning light and sound show which takes place on Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Saturdays, between 7-7:45 pm and 8-8:45 pm, in the Citadel at the Tower of David Museum, near Jaffa Gate, in the old city of Jerusalem.
With 20 projectors, 10 video players, 14 computers and 14 loudspeakers, come watch the history of Jerusalem come to life on the backdrop of the stone walls and archeological finds of the Citadel. With ‘Trompe L’Oeil’ 3D technology (French for ‘deception of the eye,’) light and sound interplay to show a historical journey of the city of Jerusalem. Viewers are whisked away into an unforgettable and total sensory experience, and the first of its kind in the world. The light and sound show is completely free of vocal narration, with only lights, images, movement and dramatic music and sound, in order to provide a narrative effect.
A joint venture by the Municipal of Jerusalem, The Ministry of Tourism, the Jerusalem Foundation and the Israel Government Tourist Corporation, the show is meant to be experienced and enjoyed by tourists and Israeli residents alike. It can get a bit chilly at night in the fall and wintertime in Jerusalem, so make sure to pack sweaters for the entire family.

Another show that’s sure to ‘light’ up your night and the Jerusalem night sky is the ‘Lanterns in the Old City,’ night show. Every Thursday night, between 7-9 pm, right next to Jaffa Gate in the Bell Center, guests are invited to hear tales of old, and come to experience life as it was in ancient Jerusalem, before the dawn of electricity.
The cool thing about the ‘Lanterns in the Old City’ night show is that it’s not only a light show, but an excellent way to historically role-play what life was like in ancient times. Come experience washing laundry in an old fashioned laundry washbasin, and come and do some cooking on a kerosene stove. You can even hand grind spices to take home with you after your visit, as a memento of your trip.
The interesting part about this show and historical role play is that all activities are performed by lantern light, exactly like it was in the Old City of Jerusalem. Perfect for the whole family, and especially great if you’ve brought the kids along, be sure to experience ‘Lanterns in the Old City.’
